It was a great weekend for me in a many ways. First, we won our game against Anderson County. Second, my beloved Volunteers rocked Georgia at Neyland Stadium. It’s tough to beat that kind of a record in the Fall! Then, I got to bring the homily to both Sunday masses this weekend at St. Albert the Great, which while nerve wracking, is also very rewarding. Offering the convocation at the AC game was also another first for this baby Deacon. The message this weekend was all on faith, and all the readings pointed in that direction, from 620 B.C. with Habakuk to Luke’s gospel. After the masses, I got to return to my old parish at St. Therese where your Spiritual Director, Fr. Orr, is pastor, and baptize a nine-month-old baby girl named Avery. She took the baptismal name of Catherine, who was a great and much venerated saint and also shared her name with my Grandmother Racey.
Being your campus minister has been getting better and better as I continue to forge new relationships with students, parents and teachers, and try to remember names. I’ve been a little scattered lately with major deadlines with UT’s recruiting, and a bunch of photo assignments that seem to pop up at the in-opportune times. But being busy is a good thing when you’re self-employed! So if it seems as if I’m not around as much this semester, it’s because I’m not, but that is headed back the other way now.
We have our all school retreat coming up this Friday and all of us in the Religion Department are very excited about this. Our presenters are coming from all over the country and Miss Roberts, in particular, has worked hard to bring you guys the very best.
I hope that you’ll open yourself up wide to the Lord Jesus as we set aside a whole school-day to explore the “great indoors” that John Mayer sings about. It’s important to find the center of why we’re a Catholic school every once in a while, and what progress we’re making as followers of Jesus. I pray that you’ll all open your hearts this Friday to what the Holy Spirit has to say to us as a faith community. Dpat
